Celebrating the Good News

Through Courage, Faith, and Love

“And Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert for forty days…” Wouldn’t it be wonderful to take 40 days off to be with God? No telephones, no traffic, no “got a deadline to meet,” no hustle/bustle, no alarm clocks, no meals to cook. Just “Kairos” – God’s time, spending time walking with Him, listening to His guidance, being in His presence. Think of all the things in your life you could talk with Him about – the sorrows, the joys, the confusions, the disappointments, the regrets, the celebrations. Unfortunately, in today’s world there doesn’t seem to be 40 minutes available to spend with God much less 40 days.

Or perhaps there is. Perhaps a desert is a state of mind rather than a place we must go. A friend who is an avid reader of all genres remarked that she wasn’t able to return a bag of books until after the 1st of May. “During Lent I only read books that will bring me closer to God.” For 40 days, she spends time with God by reading the Bible, the lives of the saints, and/or books containing spiritual direction by current theologians. It is not that the books she reads the rest of the year are bad but this is her way putting aside her other distractions and temptations to just focus on God and what He wants her to hear. It is her way of being exclusively with God; it is her time in the desert. So the question is – where is your desert and how will you spend time with God during the next six weeks?

May God bless you with joy and discernment,

Clancy Habich, principal of ACS
